 Professional Leather Journal for Sketching or Writing

                                                January 17 - Friday 9:30 -3:00

                              Cost $55   -   includes a Book ‘KIT’  for an 8" x 8" journal 
             with Leather Cover, needle, professional thread, end papers, and key closure

Learn how to prepare papers to create signatures.  Stitch each signature into the exposed binding and make a closure for your new journal.  We will cut or tear the paper in class. The finished class sketchbook or journal will be 8” by 8”  and will contain 72 pages.
                         Supplies to bring:  Please bring your own paper for the pages
                     - OR paper is available in the studio - Three 22 x 30" sheets for $12
If you bring your own paper, you will need 3 sheets of 140# paper - Fabriano or Fluid work best, CP or HP
                      (please don’t bring Arches because it tends to crack when folded) .  
    Supplies:  If possible, bring  an awl, a bone folder, and pliers.

Join Suzanne as she shares her journeys of two month long trips through INDIA.  This presentation includes a slide show, photos, memories, and textiles from India.  Enjoy an artist view of traveling with descriptions of the people, the patterns, the colors, and the culture. Suzanne will bring her handmade Sketchbook from INDIA that was featured in the July 2017 issue of Cloth•Paper•Scissors magazine.

           Enameling on copper is a hot technique! You will learn the techniques of applying powdered glass onto copper and see the magic of enamel come alive.  This class will show you how to prepare the copper, apply enamels and torch fire your pieces to create your own wearable art. The class fee includes copper, enamel, chain, use of torch and all tools needed to complete your colorful creations.  Feel free to bring your own tools clearly marked with your name. Just show up with your imagination and a love for color.

       Take your jewelry to the next level! You will design a sterling silver pendent, make a bezel that custom fits a cabochon which is soldered onto the pendent and then set the stone to create a one of a kind necklace.  You will impress yourself with your new skill! Prior soldering experience is necessary.  All materials and supplies provided. Materials include sterling silver sheet, fine silver bezel wire, sterling silver chain, and cabochon.

        Learn to 'Tackle the Torch'. If you’ve ever wanted to work with metal but are intimidated by the torch, this is the class for you.  In this beginning solder class you will learn to cut, file, texture, patina and solder while designing and creating a unique pendant using sterling silver and copper.  All you need to bring is your imagination. Class fee includes: Sterling silver, copper, sterling components, copper wire, jump rings, 20” sterling chain, use of torch, all tools needed to complete a unique creation.

Learn NEW types of bindings  - twisted, beaded and stitched.  Explore NEW ways to prepare papers and create an interesting closure.  We will cut or tear the paper in class.  The class is planned around an 8x8” book with 96 - 110 pages.  You are welcome to make a different size of book - 8x11” horizontal ledger size. Contact Suzanne (817-266-3085) before class so the cover will be the correct size.

A review of encaustic basics and ‘painting’ with hot wax. We will also explore new techniques and working with ephemera. Enjoy the  exploration of mark making using different materials such as pencils, inks and pastels, and how to incorporate them into Encaustics.

Ann Webb - Masterʼs Degree in art. Her art skills includes painter, printmaker, ceramic sculptor, jeweler, and mixed media artist. Ann loves to share what she has learned by creating a supportive environment of fun and discovery. You can do this!

Journey in Abstract Art

   Special techniques for layering with paint, texture and paper

Combine spontaneity and planning to create your own quality art piece on canvas, paper, or in your art journal. You will make your own painted, stamped and printed  papers to layer into paintings.  We will use tried and true compositions with painting, layering, and mark-making.
                    Cost $45 - Paula will bring tissue and papers to share
Supplies to bring:  Sharpie, brayer, fluid or acrylic paint (3-5 colors plus black and white), scissors, water container, spray bottle, paper towels, paint brushes, surface of your choice (canvas, watercolor paper, journal, etc. (optional: favorite collage papers).
Paula Pillow - In her amazing abstracts, Paula  explores patterns, shapes, and textures using water media and mark-making, and textures.  Line and color capture an element of the unexpected exploring a new way to view images.

              TERRIFIC  CLASS - Reactive Techniques with Copper and Iron

Create amazing wall decor with your favorite images - horses, people, hearts, birds, fish, geometrics, etc.  We’ll use Reactive paint solutions to alter canvas surfaces into genuine Iron rusted to a burnt orange, and genuine bluish-green Copper patina.  Learn to work with canvas, paper, and metals to create amazing art!
Suzanne is a versatile artist, author and teacher. She has received numerous awards for her paintings (watercolor, collage and acrylics). She was chosen 'Designer of the Year' and received 'The lifetime Achievement Award' from CHA.

Introduction to Electro-Etching

This class will teach you how to etch copper using a common household battery.  This eliminates the need for messy chemicals.  Etching is a great way to add depth and dimension to your copper jewelry. You will create a beautiful piece of jewelry while learning a clean and chemical free technique to etch copper.  You will also texture, sand, file, patina and finish your etched piece so it is ready to show off.   The class fee includes copper, leather cord, and use of instructor’s tools. All you need to bring is the desire to learn something new and have fun creating your own piece of jewelry.  Each student will get to keep the electro-etching kit you use in class.

Create fabulous and colorful works of art with texture, movement and abstract design.  We’ll use colors of acrylic paint, flow medium, silicone, and PVA to master the art of pouring.

Supplies needed:  four stretched canvases (good sizes are 4x4", 6x6”, 6x12”,  and 10x10”), 3
 plastic trash bags, 2 aluminum baking pans that will hold your canvas sizes, eight colors of acrylic paint (small bottles are OK), old 1” brush.

The Art of Suminagashi

Join this repeat of a popular class. Produce beautiful marbled Suminagashi papers using the ancient Japanese technique of inks floating on water. These beautiful Suminagashi papers can be used in book binding, greeting cards, collage and artwork.

Barbara teaches watercolor, oils, acrylics, pastels, and mixed media at Sparks Studio Art. Her Monday night venue is an on-going painting class every week.  All painting and drawing mediums are welcome.  Work on your own individual projects in the material of your choice.  BEGINNERS are welcome.  Each student receives personal instruction.

Barbara McFarland  - Magnum Cum Laude UNT grad, B.F.A in painting and drawing from U.N.T. in Denton. She works in watercolor, oils, acrylics, pastels, and mixed media. Her work has received numerous awards in local, regional, and national shows. She has spent two summers painting on location at the La Romita School of Art in Italy.
